E-Bikes for Short Riders: Step-Through Frames, Wheel Size and Fit

Shorter riders should start with the brand's rider height range, then check two more numbers: the stand-over height and the lowest saddle height. A low step-through frame and smaller wheels can bring both down. In EUNORAU's META range, the minimum rider height rises from 155 cm on 20-inch wheels to 168 cm on 27.5-inch wheels, and several models we sell start at 150 cm or less.

Brand figures checked October 22, 2026. Fit advice from Ontario's official cycling guide; rules checked October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.

The three numbers that decide fit

  • Rider height range: the brand's own range for the frame size. It is the quickest filter, but it is a guide, not a guarantee.
  • Stand-over height: how high the frame sits where you step over it. The lower it is, the easier it is to get on and to stand over the bike at a stop.
  • Minimum saddle height: the lowest the seat goes. If your correct saddle height is below the bike's minimum, the bike is too big for you, whatever the height chart says.

Velotric publishes all three for the five models below, which makes them a useful example:

Model (frame) Rider height Stand-over Lowest saddle height Wheels
Triker (one size) 147 to 196 cm 370 mm 590 mm 20-inch
Breeze 1 (Regular) 150 to 173 cm 380 mm 745 mm 27.5-inch
Fold 1 Plus (one size) 145 to 196 cm 400 mm 800 mm 20-inch
Nomad 2X (Step-Thru) 150 to 178 cm 450 mm 795 mm 26-inch
GoMad (one size) 152 to 191 cm 500 mm 720 mm 20-inch

The Fold 1 Plus has the lowest starting rider height here but the highest minimum saddle. That is why all three numbers matter: compare the saddle figure with the saddle height on a bike that fits you now, and ask the brand how it measures if you're unsure.

Step-through or step-over?

A step-through frame drops the top tube so you can step through instead of swinging a leg over. Velotric's Nomad 2X shows how much that changes: the Step-Thru frame's stand-over is 450 mm, while the High-Step frame's is 780 mm.

Ontario's cycling guide gives a simple check for each style. On a bike with a top tube, you should be able to stand flat-footed over it with 2 to 5 cm of clearance. On a step-through, which the guide calls a woman's frame, sit on the seat with the tips of both feet touching the ground. The base of the seat should then sit at least 5 cm above the seat tube.

A low frame helps riders of any height who find swinging a leg over hard. Our step-through e-bikes collection gathers them in one place.

How wheel size changes fit

Smaller wheels can bring the whole bike lower. EUNORAU's META range shows the effect, because the models share a motor, battery and 130 kg payload and differ mainly in wheel size:

EUNORAU model Tires Recommended rider height Weight
META20 1.0 20 × 3.0 in 155 to 185 cm (5 ft 1 in to 6 ft 1 in) 28.8 kg
META24 1.0 24 × 3.0 in 160 to 188 cm (5 ft 3 in to 6 ft 2 in) 28.0 kg
META26 1.0 26 × 3.0 in 163 to 191 cm (5 ft 4 in to 6 ft 3 in) 31.0 kg
META275 2.0 27.5 × 2.6 in 168 to 185 cm (5 ft 6 in to 6 ft 1 in) 31.0 kg

Himiway shows the same pattern: it recommends the 20-inch D5 2.0 for riders from 150 cm (4 ft 11 in) and the 26-inch D5 2.0 ST from 160 cm (5 ft 3 in). Centimetres are our conversions from the brands' feet and inches.

Don't go too small, though. Ontario and B.C. set a 350 mm minimum wheel diameter for e-bikes, so check the wheel size on the smallest models. For more on small-wheeled bikes, see our folding vs full-size guide, and compare our folding e-bikes.

Saddle height, reach and weight

Saddle height

Ontario's guide sets the saddle with the balls of your feet on the pedals: at the bottom of the stroke, your legs should be almost straight with the knees slightly bent. The seat post and stem must stay at least 5 cm inside the frame, and both usually have a mark showing their maximum extension.

Reach

In a normal riding position, the guide says your weight should be evenly balanced, with your hands resting lightly on the handlebars. An adjustable stem lets you change where the bars sit: Velotric lists one on the GoMad, Nomad 2X and Triker.

Weight

A lighter bike is easier to wheel, turn and hold upright at a stop. Velotric lists about 22 kg for the Breeze 1 and 36 kg for the Nomad 2X. Ontario's guide advises getting familiar with an e-bike's extra power and weight in a calm, safe place before riding in traffic.

Models we sell that start at 150 cm or less

Selection: examples of e-bikes and trikes in our store whose brand lists a minimum rider height of 150 cm (4 ft 11 in) or less, checked October 22, 2026. We left out moped-style and kids' models, and the Himiway D5 2.0 20-inch was sold out that day. This is not a ranking.

Model Type Rider height (brand) Motor Weight
Velotric Fold 1 Plus Folding step-through, 20-inch 145 to 196 cm 750 W rear hub 28.6 kg
Velotric Triker Step-through trike, 20-inch 147 to 196 cm 750 W rear hub 39 kg
Velotric Breeze 1 Step-through cruiser, 27.5-inch 150 to 173 cm (Regular) 750 W rear hub about 22 kg
Velotric Nomad 2X Fat-tire, full suspension, 26-inch 150 to 178 cm (Step-Thru) 750 W rear hub 36 kg
MEIGI MG708 HERA Step-through trike, 24-inch 150 to 188 cm (4 ft 11 in to 6 ft 2 in) 350 W front hub Not stated

Four of these list a 750 W motor, above the 500 W e-bike limit in Ontario. We sell bikes rated above 500 W for private-property use only, and our e-bike laws guide covers the rules by province.

Frequently asked questions

What size e-bike does a 5-foot woman need?

Five feet is about 152 cm. Look for a brand rider height range that starts at or below that, such as the five models in our table, then check the stand-over height and the lowest saddle height against your own measurements.

Are step-through e-bikes good for short riders?

They help, because they lower the frame where you step over it. On the Velotric Nomad 2X, the Step-Thru frame's stand-over is 450 mm against 780 mm for the High-Step. Check the lowest saddle height as well.

Is a 20-inch e-bike good for adults?

Yes, many adult e-bikes use 20-inch wheels. Velotric rates the 20-inch Fold 1 Plus for riders 145 to 196 cm, and EUNORAU's 20-inch META20 starts at 155 cm (5 ft 1 in), the lowest in its META range.

Can short riders ride fat-tire e-bikes?

Yes, if the frame fits. Velotric lists the Nomad 2X Step-Thru for riders from 150 cm, and Himiway recommends its 20-inch D5 2.0 from 150 cm (4 ft 11 in). The Nomad 2X weighs 36 kg, so check the weight too.
