Most electric bicycle repair starts with safe checks at home: charge and reseat the battery, restart the system, check that both brake levers spring back, and look up any error code in your manual. Flats, brake rub and loose bolts are ordinary bike jobs, but the motor, controller and wiring belong with a qualified mechanic, and a battery should never be opened. Under warranty, send the seller photos before any repair.
Safety guidance and rules checked October 2026 (sources at the end); where your bike's manual differs, follow it. This is general information, not legal advice.
Electric bicycle repair: what you can fix and what you can't
Park Tool says "90% of your e-bike is… a bike".
| Problem | First checks | Get help if |
|---|---|---|
| Won't power on | Charge and reseat the battery | Still dead when fully charged |
| Error code | Note it, restart, check your manual | It returns after a restart |
| Motor cuts out | Release both brake levers; let a hot bike cool; bring a cold battery to room temperature | It keeps happening |
| Brake rub | Reseat the wheel; centre the caliper | It still rubs |
| Flat on the motor wheel | Battery out, unplug the motor cable, fix the tube | Axle parts or the cable are damaged |
| Bare wires or a damaged battery | Stop riding; don't charge a damaged battery | Always; call 911 if a battery sparks or smokes |
First checks when an e-bike won't turn on or cuts out
- Battery charged and seated: charge it and click it into its mount. SR Suntour says its battery shuts down if current or temperature gets too high; pressing its power button, or removing it for a few seconds, can reset it.
- Brake levers released: Tektro says its e-bike brake sensor "cuts motor power when you pull the brake lever", so check that both levers spring fully back.
- Too hot or too cold: Bafang's manual says to let an overheated motor or controller cool down, and to bring a too-cold battery to room temperature.
- Plugs, not wires: with the battery out, as SR Suntour advises before wiring work, check that visible connectors are pushed fully together. Frayed or bare wires, or an exposed terminal, mean stop riding: Ontario's e-bike rules require all electrical terminals to be properly insulated.
- Just delivered? Within 14 days of delivery and under 10 km, a bike from us that won't power on or off, won't charge or shows an error code may qualify for a refund or exchange under our refund policy.
Reading an error code
Bafang's and SR Suntour's manuals both say to restart the system when a code appears, then contact your dealer if it stays. Codes differ by maker: error 42 is a motor sensor failure in SR Suntour's manual but low battery voltage in Bafang's DP C271 manual.
Fixing brake rub and a flat on a hub-motor wheel
Brake rub
Park Tool says rub is the main symptom of a misaligned caliper, but an improperly seated wheel can cause it too. With the bike on the floor, loosen the axle nut or quick-release, press down so the frame and axle meet, re-tighten to the maker's specification and spin the wheel.
If it still rubs, Park Tool says to rule out a bent rotor, rotor play, hub bearing play and sticky pistons, then align the caliper. On a hydraulic brake: loosen both mounting bolts, squeeze and hold the lever to centre the caliper, snug the bolts, release the lever and spin the wheel. If the rub is gone, tighten the bolts to your maker's torque; Park Tool gives about 6–8 Nm. Pad wear and contamination are in our e-bike maintenance checklist.
Flat tire on a hub-motor wheel
Park Tool says e-bike flats are fixed like any bike flat; removing a hub-motor wheel is the extra work. Steps 2 and 5 follow SR Suntour's manual for its motor.
- Power off: switch the system off and remove the battery.
- Unplug the motor: SR Suntour's connector sits under the chain stay on the side without the chain. Cut the cable ties and wiggle the two halves apart.
- Loosen the axle nuts: usually 15 mm, sometimes 18 or 19 mm, Park Tool says; photograph the washer order first. On a rear wheel, shift to the smallest cog beforehand, then pull the derailleur back to free the wheel. With hydraulic brakes, don't squeeze the lever while the wheel is out, or the pads close.
- Fix the tube: use tire levers, not a screwdriver or knife, which Park Tool says can damage the tire or tube. Find what caused the flat to help prevent another.
- Refit: align the anti-rotation washers so they slide into the dropouts. Tighten the nuts to your manual's torque with a torque wrench, as Park Tool recommends; SR Suntour lists 40 Nm for its motor. Line up the connector arrows, push it together and replace the cable ties.
- Test: spin the wheel and test both brakes before riding.

E-bike repair jobs for a qualified mechanic
Leave motor, controller and wiring repairs to a qualified mechanic. Park Tool says servicing the internals of electronic components "typically requires training from the manufacturer and is not recommended for home users."
Health Canada says never to modify, tamper with or build your own lithium-ion batteries, which risks short circuits, overheating, fires or explosions, and to replace them only with original parts from the manufacturer. SR Suntour's manual is blunter: "Do not open the battery pack." Our e-bike battery replacement guide covers how to match a new battery.
If a battery sparks or smokes, the City of Toronto says to call 911 and, if it's safe, move it outside, away from anything that could catch fire. Ask your municipality how to dispose of a damaged battery, as Health Canada advises.
Don't turn a repair into an upgrade. Ontario says modifying an e-bike's motor for more power or assisted speed is illegal, and our warranty policy says aftermarket throttles, controllers, batteries or chargers void coverage on every system they connect to. See the e-bike rules by province.
How to find an electric bike repair shop
If you don't know something about your bike, Park Tool says to check the literature that came with it or ask the person who sold it to you. Some makers' support pages carry troubleshooting videos and a claim form; EUNORAU's does. Then call a local shop and ask:
- Do you work on my system? Name the motor type and the motor and display maker.
- Do you have the maker's diagnostic tool? Several fixes in Bafang's manual use its BESST tool.
- Will you install a part I supply? Approved warranty parts are shipped to you; fitting them is at your cost.
- Do you use original electrical parts? Non-original parts, or tuning the motor for more power or speed, void coverage under our warranty policy.
Under warranty? Our terms say a shop can't authorize a claim and its invoice won't be reimbursed, so contact us with photos before any work starts.
Keep records: serial numbers, receipts and photos
- Proof of purchase: the order confirmation email and order number.
- Serial numbers: frame, battery, motor and controller.
- Delivery-day photos: our guide to buying an e-bike online covers the inspection.
- A fault log: each error code, its date and the kilometres.
A maker may ask for most of these. EUNORAU, one of the brands we sell, wants the motor serial number and a video for a hub-motor defect, and the battery number and a video for a battery defect. Its claim form also asks for proof of purchase, the error code, current mileage and when the issue began.
Serial numbers matter for recalls too: one 2025 e-bike recall posted by the Government of Canada identified affected bikes by their serial number. Search your brand and model on its recalls and safety alerts site.
Buying second-hand? Ask for the receipt and serial numbers, and see our guide to buying a used e-bike. Buying new instead? Compare our e-bikes for sale.
How warranty claims work for bikes bought from us
Your warranty is the manufacturer's warranty for verified manufacturing defects, typically 1–2 years depending on the brand, and the manufacturer decides each claim. It covers parts only, never labour, and not wear, damage from use or impact, assembly errors, missed maintenance or modifications.
- Stop: stop riding and don't have any repair work done.
- Email us: write to support@fastebikes.ca from the address you ordered with; that verifies you as the original purchaser.
- Send evidence: your order number, a description of the issue and clear photos or video of the part. Claims can't be assessed without photos.
- We take it to the maker: we present the claim for you and follow it up to a decision.
- If approved: the replacement part is shipped to you; installation labour is your responsibility.
- If declined: we tell you why in writing and what your options are.
Full terms are on our warranty page. Provincial consumer protection laws can also give you rights as a buyer.
Frequently asked questions
Can I repair an e-bike myself?
Yes, for bike parts such as flats, brake rub, chains and bolts. Park Tool says servicing electronic internals typically requires manufacturer training, so leave the motor, controller and wiring to a mechanic and never open a battery.
Will a bike shop work on an e-bike bought online?
Ask before you book, naming your motor type and maker. For bikes from us, contact us with photos before any shop work, since a shop can't authorize a warranty claim.
Can an e-bike battery be repaired?
Treat it as a replacement, not a repair, and stop using a damaged one. Health Canada says never to modify, tamper with or build your own lithium-ion batteries, and to replace them only with original parts from the manufacturer, or to contact the retailer if the maker can't be reached.
