Folding Fat Tire E-Bikes

A folding fat tire e-bike is an electric bike with a frame that folds and tires about 4 in (10 cm) wide, so it grips snow, sand and loose gravel, then packs down for the car or the closet. On the bikes below, compare weight, folded size, suspension and where the battery sits. Each one ships free across Canada, with 15-day returns. For snow riding, read our guide to fat tire e-bikes in winter; for folders on narrower tires too, see folding e-bikes.

What to check on a fat tire folding e-bike

Weight and the battery

Fat-tire bikes are generally heavier, says The Maple Leaf, a National Defence publication. Brand figures here run from 28.0 kg (EUNORAU E-FAT-MN) to 37.2 kg (Jasion Hunter Pro). If you lift the bike often, take a removable battery off first: the E-FAT-MN's locks in under the saddle, and the one on the Taubik Escape S slides up and out without removing the seat. Lighter folders are in our folding e-bikes.

Folded size and your car

The same article notes that fat-tire bikes don't fit most bike and car racks, so folding one into the car is the way around that. In brand figures converted from inches, the Heybike Ranger 3.0 Pro folds to 106 × 52 × 83 cm and the Jasion Hunter Pro to 101 × 65 × 80 cm; some brands give none. Health Canada advises against leaving batteries in a hot or cold car.

Rigid, front fork or full suspension

Low-pressure fat tires soften small bumps; keep them inside the pressure range printed on the tire sidewall. Beyond that, choose rigid (E-FAT-MN), a front fork (Escape S, 65 mm) or full suspension (Ranger 3.0 Pro, Hunter Pro, X-Hunter ST). For rough trails, see full-suspension e-bikes.

Tires, snow and battery size

Fat tires hold traction on sand, snow, mud and loose gravel, The Maple Leaf says, but can be unstable on icy surfaces, and their rolling resistance slows them on the road. In the table below, battery capacity runs from 600 to 720 Wh. Full-size fat bikes on 26 x 4.0 in tires are in our fat tire e-bikes.

Max load and step-over

Listed max loads run from 120 kg (SAMEBIKE LOTDM200-II) to 218 kg (X-Hunter ST); pick one that covers you and your bags. The E-FAT-MN and LOTDM200-II have step-through frames, the X-Hunter ST a low-step one.

Questions

What is a folding fat tire e-bike?

It is an electric bike with a folding frame and fat tires, 20 x 4.0 in on most models here. Wikipedia says fat-bike tires are typically 3.8 in (97 mm) or wider, so they press lightly on snow, sand and mud. The fold lets the bike pack into less space, but fat-tire bikes are generally heavier, The Maple Leaf (National Defence) says.

How heavy is a folding fat tire e-bike?

On this page, plan on about 28 to 37 kg: brand figures run from 28.0 kg (EUNORAU E-FAT-MN and SAMEBIKE LOTDM200-II) to 37.2 kg (Jasion Hunter Pro). If stairs or a car trunk are part of your day, choose a removable battery, like the one on the E-FAT-MN or Taubik Escape S, and lift the bike without it.

Will a folding fat tire e-bike fit in my car?

It depends on the folded size and your cargo space, so measure first. Brand figures, converted from inches: the Heybike Ranger 3.0 Pro folds to 106 x 52 x 83 cm and the Jasion X-Hunter to 110 x 60 x 83 cm. Some brands list no folded size. Once you arrive, take a removable battery out: Health Canada says not to leave batteries in a hot or cold car.

Are folding fat tire e-bikes good in snow?

Yes on snow, with care on ice. The Maple Leaf (National Defence) lists snow among the surfaces where fat tires give excellent traction, and warns they can be unstable on icy surfaces. A folder also suits winter storage in a small space, and a removable battery can come indoors, since Health Canada says to store batteries at room temperature in a dry location.

Do folding fat tire e-bikes have suspension?

Most in this collection do. The EUNORAU E-FAT-MN is rigid and leaves the cushioning to its 20 x 4.0 in tires. The Taubik Escape S has a 65 mm front fork, and the SAMEBIKE LOTDM200-II pairs a front lockout fork with a seat shock absorber. Full suspension comes on models such as the Heybike Ranger 3.0 Pro and Mars 3.0, the SAMEBIKE RS-A02 Pro and the Jasion Hunter Pro.

Which folding fat tire e-bike should I buy?

Start with how you will use it. To lift it often, the rigid EUNORAU E-FAT-MN ties for the lowest listed weight here, 28.0 kg. For rough trails, the Jasion Hunter Pro pairs a 180 mm adjustable hydraulic fork with a Horst-link rear. For heavy riders or cargo, the Jasion X-Hunter ST lists the highest max load in this collection, 218 kg.
