The trail network
The City of Kitchener says two asphalt trails between Kitchener and Waterloo get year-round maintenance, which keeps them free of snow and ice in winter:
- Iron Horse Trail: approximately 5 km between Kitchener and Waterloo, part of the Trans Canada Trail and used by more than 250,000 people every year.
- Spur Line Trail: from Ahrens Street West, north of downtown Kitchener, to uptown Waterloo, where it meets the Laurel Trail (2.5 km, per the City of Waterloo).
The Walter Bean Grand River Trail adds more than 25 km along the river, from Kiwanis Park to Doon Valley, mostly on gravel 2 to 3 m wide. For winter, Environment Canada climate normals (1991–2020) for the Region of Waterloo airport give a January daily average of −6.3 °C and 61.4 days a year with a high at or below 0 °C.
Downtown Kitchener by bike
Kitchener's downtown cycling grid includes protected bike lanes on Joseph, Water, Ontario and Cedar streets. The City reports a 164 % increase in ridership, with 54,781 cycling trips in the first seven months of 2023. You can park your bike free in the City's secure parking garages. Waterloo counts more than 230 km of trails, bike lanes and signed routes and earned Platinum Bicycle Friendly Community status in September 2026; Share the Road Cycling Coalition rates Kitchener Gold and Cambridge Bronze.
Commuter or cargo
Until the end of October, the Region, with Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo, ran a shared e-bike and e-scooter rental program. If that got you hooked, owning a bike keeps you riding after the season. For the daily run, the EUNORAU META275 2.0 pairs a step-through frame with 27.5 x 2.6 in tires, a torque sensor, a front suspension fork and a 720 Wh battery that takes an optional second one. For groceries or delivery work, the Velotric GoMad is a compact cargo bike with an integrated rear rack, a 227 kg payload rating, 20 x 4.0 in Kenda fat tires and an 802 Wh battery. See cargo e-bikes.

Is there a Kitchener e-bike store with test rides?

Can a local shop assemble or repair my e-bike?
A local bike shop you choose can do the assembly: send the order straight there and book it with the shop. We don't do repairs ourselves. If it is delivered to your home, take photos of the box before opening, then inspect the frame, wheels and battery.
